Mold found growing in work release center
Mold in a laundry room and storage area at the Minnehaha County work release center will cause some inmates to be relocated but should not affect operations.
The mold was reported to jail officials last week, Warden Darin Young said Tuesday.
"An engineering company came in and tested the area. It tested out in the normal range," he said. The spore count was "about right in the middle of the normal range," and no toxic stachybotrys or black mold as it is known was discovered, Young said.
The company that tested the site did not recommend any evacuation. The areas with mold are separate from living facilities, and neither staff nor inmates have reported medical symptoms.
A mold remediation company will begin cleaning Monday, a procedure expected to take several days.
Young said he already has shifted 18 inmates from the smallest of three living units at the work release center to the main floor to do cleaning and maintenance at the site.
"We've got 228 beds, and we had 140 inmates at this morning's count. This is a really good time to do something with cleanup," he said.
After mold is removed, the laundry and storage areas also will be repainted.
The county opened the work release center in 1993. This is the first incidence of mold at the facility, said Ken McFarland, Minnehaha County Commission administrative officer. McFarland said the county's facilities management staff is compiling the costs of testing and mold removal, but he does not expect a big hit on the budget.
