Kim wins Ontario junior golf title
Lucas Kim is the new Ontario Junior Boys (U19) golf champion.
Kim carded a final round par 72 Friday at the Bay of Quinte Golf and Country Club to take the title by three shots over Bryce Evon. Both players are unaffiliated with any club.
Kim, from Toronto, took a four-shot lead into the final round and it proved to be more than enough.
Kim shot rounds of 69-69-67- 72 on the par 72, 6,571-yard layout to finish at 11-under 277.
Evon, who plays out of Windsor, shot a two-under 70 in the final round for a 280 total and second place.
Chris Hemmerich, who was second and trailed Kim by four shots going into Friday's round, shot a two-over 74 to place third with a 283 total. He plays out of Kitchener Westmount.
Top Quinte area player was Picton's Conor Hache who carded a final round 73 to finish tied for 13th with a 294.
Hache had rounds of 73-70-78-73.
Kim bogeyed the opening hole Friday but neither Evon or Hemmerich was able to take advantage.
Kim got the lost shot back on number four.
Kim played the par fives at 11-under in the tournament and that proved to be the decisive difference.
Evon and Hemmerich were both six-under on the par fives.
Only three of the 63 players who competed in the final round Friday broke par.
Sixteen-year old Josh Whalen of Napanee, was one of the players to break par when he shot a 70. He finished with a 297 total to tie for 20th place.
Whalen started the round with a bogey but he recovered and played the final 14 holes at three-under.
Whalen had rounds of 74-77-76-70.
Elliott Fledderus, of Trenton, placed 54th with a 308 total. Fledderus, who plays out of the BQGCC, started the four-day tournament with decent rounds of 73-76 to place among the Top 30, but he couldn't maintain those numbers over the final two rounds.
In round 3, Fledderus shot a 78, then Friday he came in with an 81.
