Serious birders can expect to raise their chances of a great gray owl, studying the prey species of birds, habitat and behavior, but mostly an observation result of a happy accident.

"You could go out 100 times in the home right at the right time and we never see," said John Parker of the Sacajawea Audubon Society."The great gray owl is extremely high for people on the lists of birds they would like. They are a particular species."

The great gray owl is among the largest owls in North America. The birds have a wingspan of up to five feet. Some are over 30 inches tall.

Despite their large stature, great gray owl generally weigh less than three pounds, a body mass of at least 15 percent smaller than the more common horned owl great, according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

"Grey Owl is a huge Grand," said Denver Holt, director of the Owl Research Institute in Charlo."They could be the largest owl in the United States and Canada by the length and breadth, but how they disappear when they fly into a tree right in front of you, it is beyond me.

"Even when you know where their nests are and where they live, they are incredibly difficult to do," says Holt. "When they are in the woods, you can not see them."

The range of the great gray owl extends from the spruce-tamarack bogs of central Alaska through Canada's boreal forests. Just a few isolated pockets of the continental United States to maintain populations of great gray owl.

In Montana, where the great gray owl is a species of concern, the birds occupy coniferous forests and grasslands along the flanks of the Rocky Mountains. Birds of prey mainly on small mammals, rodents in general, but also eat other small birds and insects.
