DTE program helps people cut their energy costs

Explaining the DTE Energy-Savings Outreach Program, staffer Yvonne Velez uses an analogy similar to the one about giving a man a fish vs. teaching him to fish.

“We can't help the community by paying their (utility) bills each month — there will be another bill next month,” said Velez. “We can help lower their bills to make them more affordable.”

On Tuesday, Velez and Tara Cason were manning a table at the Westland Farmers Market explaining the program and signing people up for the free home energy consultation.

“The program is offered to all of Michigan that uses DTE Energy. It started in Detroit, Highland Park and Hamtramck,” said Velez. “Westland was the first other city that we hit. You can rent or own — apartments are eligible. We offer alternatives — we're not about giving you products and leaving. It's educating you about where and how you can save on energy.”

The DTE employees will take care of some energy and water-saving steps like installing compact fluorescent light bulbs, water-saving shower heads, water-saving faucet aerators for kitchen and bathrooms and water heat pipe wrap.

Three years ago, Norwayne resident Henry Johnson did major renovations at his home, including new windows and insulation, but still found the inspection beneficial.

“It will reduce water and electrical use. It was also an opportunity for a free inspection of my home and ways to reduce energy consumption,” said Johnson. “They looked at the entire house. They looked at the furnace and the hot water tank.
