Saints Fetzer, Gallagher up training regimen at CTS

Devin Caldwell had one of her best seasons of softball in 2011.

She had 42 starts at second base and batted a team-best .328 with a team-high tying 12 multiple-hit games as a freshman for Sacramento State. She had seven doubles and 14 RBIs and committed just five errors all season.

For her efforts, the Napa High School graduate was named as the freshman of the year on the Pacific Coast Softball Conference’s All-Coastal Division team and was also chosen first-team all-conference.

A lot of Caldwell’s success is due to the work she puts in off the field. She has been going to CTS Strength & Conditioning in Napa three days a week over the winter break, working on her speed and all things strength-related so that she’s ready to go when the Hornets start their spring season.

“I feel like I’m in great shape to go back,” said Caldwell. “It’s very important — it keeps me strong, in shape. It takes me to the next level as an athlete.”

Caldwell, a three-time All-Napa County selection for the Indians, isn’t the only college athlete who has been training at CTS Strength & Conditioning, located at 1755 Industrial Way, No. 21, off of California Blvd.

McRae Kirmse, a Justin-Siena graduate, who plays lacrosse at Western New England University (Springfield, Mass.), and Taylor Willis, a sophomore out of Napa High who plays basketball at UC Santa Cruz, have also used the facility that is owned by John Cortese.

“His workouts really get me ready,” said Caldwell.

“His workouts really work up your endurance, which is one thing that I need to work on. It just gets me ready and takes what I’ve done in fall season and continues the speed and the strength that I have going.”

Caldwell also trained at CTS Strength & Conditioning during the winter break of her freshman year at Sac State.

“I felt 20 times stronger when I went back,” she said. “My speed had increased. It showed in my season. I had a great season and I feel like a lot of it has to do with the training and the time I put in here.

WAC Softball: 2012 PREVIEW: Brigham Young Cougars

It could work out one of two ways. Either the rest of the nation will see the WAC for what it truly is in softball this year -- a juggernaut of a conference, where at least four of the eight teams head into the season with legitimate hopes of reaching the Women's College World Series. Or, some won't even realize the WAC added the 3-time defending Mountain West Conference champion to an already formidable group of softball teams. Thus, the WAC's decision to add BYU could end up hurting the postseason chances of fellow top tier teams like Fresno State, Hawai'i or New Mexico State. Some also believe even BYU's postseason chances may have been better as an independent this season. Again, we won't know how this will play out until May, but it was a risky choice to add the Cougars. History is mostly on the Cougars' side. BYU is 37-5 all-time versus every current WAC team aside from Fresno State. The Bulldogs are the only WAC team with a winning record against the Cougars. Fresno State has won six of eight all-time meetings in the series, including last year when the Bulldogs won 7-3 at a tournament in San Diego. BYU went 4-1 against the conference last season, including a pair of wins at Hawai'i when the Wahine was ranked in the Top 25. Six players, all of whom started more than 35 games a year ago, are back to lead a Cougars offense that hit .304 as a team in 2011. However, several of the greatest softball players ever to wear a BYU uniform -- including a pair of All-Americans and three NFCA All-Region picks -- are all gone, leaving some tremendous gaps in the lineup for coach Gordon Eakin to fill. Four of BYU's six players named to the 2011 All-MWC team have graduated, including conference Pitcher of the Year Paige Affleck, a second team All-American. Affleck practically did it all in the circle for the Cougars a year ago, starting 40 games and going 26-12 with an impressive 1.98 ERA.
