Battle of the Bands needs 1 more teen band
MUKILTEO, Washington (STPNS) -- Just six local teen bands may compete for the coveted Kamiaxe, a gold plated guitar that will be handed down to the victors of this years fifth annual Battle of the Bands competition.
So far, five bands are signed up to compete in the 2011 Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival teen Battle of the Bands meaning its not too late to enter the competition.
The competition needs one more performance slot filled to meet the competitions six-band limit. Any local teen band qualifies, as long as more than half of the members of the band are high school students.
The Battle of the Bands is a unique event in that the kids get to create their own show, said competition coordinator Maggie McManus.
The competition will be held on Sept. 10, the Saturday of the Lighthouse Festival, at the Rosehill Community Center, at 304 Lincoln Ave. The doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 each.
Though proceeds are donated to the Kamiak music program, McManus would like to see all types of teens vie for the last spot, even if they are not involved in their schools music department.
The thing that I am so jazzed about is that this is an arena where they really get to show off their talent, not just give back what has been given to them in a classroom environment, McManus said.
Now they get to take it, put their own style to it, and really show off what kind of musicians they are.
Performing for the third and final time will be the band Lead Based Paint, who as last years winners of the Kamiaxe gets the traditional honor of being the opening act for the event.
Its a good way to show our friends what weve been doing, said Gus McManus, one of Lead Based Paints three guitarists. Gus is also Maggie McManuss son and a senior at Kamiak High School.
