Getting up close and personal with nature
Patiently, the hunter waits for just the right moment, his finger ever ready to depress just slightly and shoot his prey.But this hunter's weapon is none other than a digital camera and high-powered lens, and he is watching for the chance to get the perfect picture.
Seeing those pictures and hearing about the process of taking them was the source of much enjoyment recently for local Audubon Society members and area wildlife enthusiasts.
Logan County photographer Mack Hitch gave his first presentation of his own pictures, showing images of owls, pheasants, quail, hawks, ospreys, blue herons, ducks, geese, squirrels, frogs, snakes, turtles, crawfish, raccoons, porcupines, coyotes, mink, muskrats, beavers, foxes, rabbits, deer, lizards, dung beetles, skunks, opossums, spiders and lots of types of songbirds and waterfowl.
All of those pictures were taken in northeast Colorado, mainly in and around the South Platte River basin, which shows the variety of wildlife to be found here, Hitch said.
And that was something Local Audubon Society member and event organizer Bruce Bosley said he hoped the nearly 20 people who went got out of Hitch's presentation.
"It's just amazing what you can find if you just go outdoors," said Bosley, who is also a Colorado State University Morgan County Extension agent.
Hitch certainly had the proof of that in his slideshow.
After retiring several years ago, Hitch really dove into his hobby of photographing wildlife.
Now, he will spend days, weeks and months tracking a single group of birds or animals, waiting for just the right moment to capture an egg hatching or birds returning from their winter migration, or whatever other wildlife catches his fancy.
"The river I haunt is just over here," Hitch said, pointing north toward the South Platte.
He said he goes out shooting pictures at least 180 times a year.
