Pancake Breakfast for WWII Vets' Flight
A pancake breakfast fundraiser is slated for Saturday, July 30th, in Colorado Springs to collect donations for Southern Colorado's inaugural "Honor Flight". The flight will carry WWII veterans from the region to Washington D.C. to view the WWII Memorial.
A non-profit has formed to fund the mission. The first Southern Colorado Honor Flight will take place this fall. Organizers say this is a way to give a priceless memory to veterans who are still alive, and give back to those who sacrificed for our freedom.
The pancake breakfast will run from 7 a.m. - 9 a.m. at the Applebee's Restaurant on North Academy and Goddard in Colorado Springs. KKTV 11 news Anchor Shannon Brinias will join other "celebrity servers", like El Paso County Commissioner Peggy Littleton and City Council member Bernie Herpin.
Tickets are $7 each, and acan be purchased at the door.
It's estimated it will cost about $700 for every veteran to be taken on the trip. Organizers would like to bring 36 veterans on the first flight.
Jesse Boyd Jr., 86, is expected to be among them. He was drafted into the army when he was 17 years old. He trained as a radio and signal equipment specialist, and even helped develop the first walkie talkies used in combat. His first deployment to the Philippines still haunts him.
"As we were going onto the beach we were at eye level with all the battle ships and you could see when they fired the big salvo of shells onto the island you could see the battleships go sideways," Boyd said. “If we hadn't won, we would not be here.”
After WWII, Boyd served in Korea and Vietnam alongside so many other American heroes.
"So you see, the thing is, you never forget who you were with," Boyd recalls with tears in his eyes.
"My particular time I understand there's a thousand of us dying a day and I'm going to hold off on that as long as I can, but at any rate that's my feeling and like I say I'm proud to wear this uniform," Boyd said choking back tears.
