Third shift running at Flint Truck Assembly
FLINT, Michigan — Joe Rundell hopes the third shift that began at Flint Assembly on Sunday night is a sign that things are looking up for General Motors.
In his 26 years with GM, the Clio man has seen coworkers laid off, work moved to Mexico and morale drop as the automaker struggled to survive.
But Sunday seemed to be a reversal of that, said Rundell, a quality control inspector.
“This is the first time I’ve ever worked at an assembly plant that has three shifts,” said Rundell, 50. “It is not traditionally done.”
In January, GM announced it was adding the third shift of about 750 hourly and salaried employees at Flint Assembly to keep up with demand for the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra. In July, GM announced it was investing $328 million in the plant.
The third shift came on for the first time at 11 p.m. Sunday, staffed by current truck plant employees who switched shifts and GM employees who were brought back from layoffs.
“First of all, it’s been a long time coming,” said Dana Rouse, chairman of UAW Local 598. “That puts us at full capacity on our truck line, where we got to put another 715 folks.
“We created work and added job security.”
The return of the third shift was a welcome change of pace for the plant, which was in danger of closing in 2009 and saw the elimination of 400 jobs that year.
The plant, which opened in 1947 and has 3.7 million square feet of floor space, is now a symbol of the new life in GM, said GM spokesman Tom Wickham.
“This is significant and we have been running quite a bit of overtime to meet the demand for the heavy-duty pickups,” he said. “Adding the shift takes pressure off of the people.”
The plant had run two, 10-hour shifts Monday through Thursday. Friday was tagged as an overtime day, Wickham said. Workers regularly worked on Fridays to keep up with the demand for trucks, he added.

Tips on How to Make Third Shift More ManageableWhile working third shift, individuals are likely to experience darkness as nighttime hours make their way into a typical work shift. Illuminating one's work area with light can help combat a body's natural tendency to slow down and rest at night. Staying active during third shift as opposed to sitting in place can also keep a person awake and alert. Depending on the employee's position, staying busy by cleaning around his or her work area or taking inventory can also assist with this task.
