Fate of local post office still up in the air in Hasbrouck Heights
A letter from the United States Postal Service regarding the possible closing of the Hasbrouck Heights Post Office, located on 185 Boulevard, was read at the Dec. 13 council meeting assuring residents that the study is still on-going and no final decision has been made.
The letter was in response to Mayor Rose Heck's inquires about the study that was announced in August of 50 branches in New Jersey, including Hasbrouck Heights , two branches in Fair Lawn , Wallington and Wood-Ridge , possibly being shut down.
The letter, written by Robert Schultz of the United States Postal Service, assured the mayor that no final decision has been made regarding the fate of the borough's post office saying that it is just the beginning of an in-depth study.
"We know that the Postal Service's customers have many options and choices regarding when and where to conduct their postal business. The majority of these options or choices do not involve a physical post office. The Postal Service continues to assertively review and evaluate our post office operations in a continuing effort to better meet customers' retail needs, advance productivity and enhance efficiency while still cutting costs," the letter said.
The letter said the review will closely evaluate all the findings, including public feedback before a final decision has been made.
A public meeting regarding the initial results of the study of the post offices will be held on Dec. 29 in Little Ferry 's Washington School, located at 123 Liberty St., from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The public will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback to the Postal Service. The public input will also be factored into any final decisions.
"The post office has been there for years and a lot of people still use it," Heck said in August after learning that the Hasbrouck Heights post office was on the study list. "It's a disappointment but it's their prerogative."
On Sept. 14 the council passed a resolution stating that the mayor and council requested that the United States Postal Service carefully reconsider any action to remove the town's post office.
