One-stop event in Anderson offers free haircuts and school supplies

Lamario Copeland and Larandas Yeargin of Natural Born Hustlers decided with Johnson to start the annual Back 2 School Haircut Day, which is in its second year, to lend a hand to their community. On Sunday afternoon, parents and their children lined up outside Styles N Motion Salon on East River Street in Anderson for free haircuts and school supplies.
The salon bustled with children playing with balloons as they waited their turn. Others sat in barber chairs getting their heads shaved. Some almost fell asleep to the buzz of electric clippers.
“I grew up in Anderson, and I know we never had anything like this,” Copeland said. “We're going to keep doing it.”
A modest number of children and parents took advantage of the first Back 2 School Haircut Day, but Copeland estimates that attendance this year tripled compared with 2010. By 3:30 p.m., about 50 children had received haircuts.
Yeargin said when he was a child, there was no such thing as a free haircut.
“I had to work for mine,” he said. “I had to clean up and cut grass to get my own haircut.”
Everything Sunday was free, from dental exams provided by Small Smiles Dentistry in Spartanburg to donated pencils, scissors, poster board and rulers to fill backpacks.
Natural Born Hustlers was able to pull off the day without the help of a sponsorship from a large business. The salon owner lent space, and barbers and stylists from Belton, Anderson and Greenville donated their time. A Facebook campaign requested the school supplies, most of which came from individuals.
Parents and children ate pizza while they waited. To show children the importance of dental care, juice was offered to children instead of sugary soda.
Mary Dean of Anderson brought her two grandsons to the salon because children's haircuts usually cost about $10, and that expense can add up fast, she said.

After your back to school cut is created, it should be maintained with cuts every four to six weeks in order to continue to look good for such events as school pictures, homecoming dances and recitals!
