After years of public pressure, the Ministry of Railways has finally provided a non-stop train between Amritsar Chandigarh earlier this year. But even as it has complied with popular demand, he introduced one of the slowest trains its Duronto. The train takes four hours to drive 270 kms, only half an hour less than what a bus would not stop.The Shatabdi from Chandigarh to Delhi takes 3 hours and 15 minutes to cover the same distance almost in spite of several stops on the road.

Passengers in Amritsar and Chandigarh do not complain that the trip is much more comfortable and less expensive than the luxury buses. The fare is Rs including food over 355 luxury buses that charge Rs 350 (without food). The lobby of private bus transport is obviously not too happy with what they see as a major competitor for their services.

There are complaints that the lobby of bus transport has resulted in powerful that there are large delays in introduction of rail links between major cities of Punjab. For 20 years, the railway is hard to establish a rail link between Chandigarh and Ludhiana, a distance of only 100 kms. Began in late 1990, the project has progressed at a snail's pace with constantly receive extended time.

While the Chandigarh-Morinda segment is completed, work on the Morinda-essential Sahnawal - a stretch of 50 km - has been waiting for many years.Work is also still Sahnawal between the section and Ludhiana - the third and final part of the rail link. The deadline for connecting to Chandigarh-Ludhiana would be March 31, 2010. But he was inexplicably extended to March 31, 2013.

Commonwealth Champion Bhullar Wins 5th Straight Canadian ...

EDMONTON – Commonwealth Champion and Richmond resident Arjan Singh Bhullar won hi s fifth straight Canadian Wrestling Championship in the 120 kg class in Edmonton last weekend.  Bhullar, the current Commonwealth Games Champion, won all of his matches to become the only person ever to win five Canadian titles.

The defending champion credits his coaches and training partners at BMWC (Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club at SFU) for all of his success.

“The team prepared me really well for this competition,” Bhullar told the LINK.

He is thankful to those that trained and competed with him.  It is this competition that makes them all grow and reach for higher grounds. The success of many wrestlers from our community is no longer confined to the community’s summer tournaments.   The new generation has arrived and is conquering the bigger stages.

Yogi Johl was the first to break the barriers by winning the Canadian Championship in the Heavyweight division.  This division is the pride and joy of Punjabis and Bhullar smilingly agrees “they love their heavyweights”.  There was a time when a national title would have been just a dream but these group of athletes has made it look so easy.  The top three heavyweights will no doubt represent the community well as they are all under the age of 25 and there is still a lot more wrestling to come.

Bhullar will now focus on the World Championship to be held in Turkey this September.  Interestingly, the top three finishers in the 120 kg class are from BMWC and are training partners  of Bhullar, leading to the notion that the Richmond gym is a den of Champions.

High School sensation and eighteen year old Sunny Dhinsa placed second in the men’s freestyle and 1st in the Junior (U21) 120 KG class.  He also won the senior men’s Greco Roman Canadian Championships.  He will represent Canada at the Junior and Senior World Championships.  In third place Heavyweight was Gurdeep S. Bisla of Surrey.  The top three Heavyweight finishers are not only competitors but training partners and friends.
