IM Well Seminars scheduled
The IM WELL Seminar is scheduled for Thursday, January 12 in Worthington. Starting a 7:00 p.m. at the Travelodge, the seminar will feature Dr. Joel Wallach, B.S., DVM, ND. He is the author of the book, “Dead Doctors Don’t Lie.” Wallach is being recognized with a national award, the 2011 Klaus Schwarz Commemorative Medal. Schwarz was a leading trace element researcher and the award recognizes trace element researchers that have made major discoveries in the field. Wallach is being recognized for his discovery of an animal model of cystic fibrosis (CF) in the offspring of a family of inadequately fed rhesus monkeys. This demonstrated that pancreatic lesions which are identical to those observed in patients with CF, can be produced by nutritional imbalances such as selenium deficiency, and that some forms of CF are, in principle, nutritionally preventable. Selenium plays a role in the functioning of the thyroid gland and in every cell that uses thyroid hormone. Dietary selenium comes from nuts, cereals, meat, mushrooms, fish, and eggs. Brazil nuts are the richest ordinary dietary source. In descending order of concentration, high levels are also found in kidney, tuna, crab, and lobster. The human body's content of selenium is believed to be in the 13–20 milligram range. Although it is toxic in large doses, selenium is an essential micronutrient for animals. Additional seminars by Wallach are set for Monday and Tuesday, January 9 and 10, at the Best Western Plus Ramkota Hotel and Conference Center, 3200 Maple Street, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Wednesday, January 11, at the AmericInn in Marshall, 1406 Lyon Street.
