Chesnee florist wins awards at state group's convention

Jolley couldn't help but think of his mother, whose funeral was held exactly a year earlier at the same time, 7 p.m., as the start of the Designer of the Year competition in which he was entered.

“Thinking about (the funeral) made it a bit of a challenge,” Jolley said. “At one point, I started to cry and had to calm myself down. It was a little nerve-racking.”

Jolley, who owns and operates Piedmont Flower Gallery in downtown Chesnee, was able to regain his composure and produce the winning floral arrangements that earned him the 2011 Designer of the Year award.

The next morning, the Chesnee native won the S.C. Florist Association Palmetto Cup for his work in an interpretative design competition.

For his efforts, Jolley was presented with two large trophies (to be returned to the S.C. Florist Association next year and passed to future winners) and two smaller versions (for permanent keepsake).

“Mama would be really tickled,” Jolley said. “She would be real proud. If she were here, she would have both of those small (trophies) at the house.”

Jolley last won the Palmetto Cup in 2007, and he said his mother proudly displayed the small trophy in her home until he opened Piedmont Flower Gallery.

“When I opened my flower shop, mama told me I needed to take it to the store so that others could see it,” Jolley said.

To win the Designer of the Year award, Jolley had to create four floral arrangements within a short period of time. The contestants were given materials with which to work.

“I had to create a sympathy spray for a funeral and then an arrangement for a man in a hospital,” Jolley said. “Next, they said to make any body flower — a wrist corsage is what I made. For the last one, they told us to make whatever we wanted, so I did a more modern centerpiece (in which) the flowers were real tight, overlapping and no greenery.

Corsages. Corsages are flowers worn by women on special occasions such as weddings, proms, and other formal occasions. Corsages can be made with either one single flower, a focal flower, such as a rose or an enchantment lily. A single rose corsage may be embellished with green fern, asparagus fern, baby’s breath and other filler flowers.

Corsages can be made of several smaller flowers. These are multi-flower corsages. Each flower and filler flowers are wired together individually and then wired together as one flower. As with the single flower corsage, a ribbon is also added to the multi-flower corsage to finish off the design.

Wrist corsages are made the same as a single-flower or a multi-flower corsage. Before packaging any corsage be sure and add at least 1-2 corsage pins. A wrist corsage does not need a corsage pin. Sending a corsage out of your flower shop is a good chance for advertisement for your shop.
