Winter the dolphin's trainer has her own dolphin tale
CLEARWATER
Winter the dolphin glided slowly through the water, watching the woman relaxing in the pool below.
It was a Sunday morning just after sunrise. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium was still and quiet. Abby Stone made breakfast for Winter, an ice bucket of fish and a good dose of menhaden oil. She knelt and hugged the dolphin skin soft gray.
"Hi, love," she said. "I see you."
The winter was a baby, two months, when she was transported to the aquarium. Rescuers found her bloodied and low off the coast of Florida in the east, its tail torn by a line of crab traps.Few expected her to survive the loss of its tail.
Abby Stone, a trainer at the aquarium, was one of the first to his expectations. She bottle-fed her goat's milk and rocked in the cold water of the pool. She held for hours in the dark, afraid she was too weak to swim.
Today, six years later, Abby is known as "Mom winter." She taught signs of winter whistled commands. She taught him to swim with a prosthetic tail. She avoided looking at the store, while If buying KY jelly to lubricate the sleeve that covered the stump winter.
"When I'm not here, I think a lot of winter," Abby said."When winter hurts, it hurts."
Winter is a star now, the inspiration of 273 pounds for Hollywood Dolphin Tale, which begins Friday. Abby, 31, remains his caregiver. It is flexible and Pixie-esque, with deep blue eyes and dark brown hair drawn into a bun. She spends her days barefoot, flitting back and forth to the winter pool on the deck of the waterfront aquarium.
Last year, fears that winter would be afraid of the camera when shooting began, Abby asked for volunteers for its circle of fake cameras made from gas cans. For three months during filming, Abby worked 14 hours a day for winter care, teaching and mentoring his choreography of the actor who plays Phoebe, Winter trainer in the film.
In the film, Abby can be seen in the background of some shots, playing an extra in a movie about his life.

Nearby is Sealife Brighton (Marine Parade, 604 234, visitsealife.com), regarded as the world's oldest public aquarium. The displays are inventive but the fabulous Victorian architecture proves more mesmerising than the sharks and rays.
