Long, slow haul: Man makes 4100-mile tractor ride

Badger car ferry, the Ludington Daily News reported. Wolfsen, also known as "Tractor Dave," set off in June from Fremont, about 40 miles from Ludington, on a red 1937 tractor. The vehicle has a top speed of 25 mph.

He hopes to have raised awareness and about $50,000 for the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee and Food Resource Bank with his trip.

"I love old tractors and I'm concerned about people in need. In this project, I can act on both of my passions," Wolfsen said.

Wolfsen had planned to ride 9,300 miles through 48 states, but time and bad weather cut short his plans, The Muskegon Chronicle reported

Wolfsen owned an agricultural equipment dealership in Fremont before selling it six years ago. He also drives a road commission truck.

CRWRC Responds to Horn of Africa ... - Christian Reformed Church

“In Kenya, CRWRC has provided food aid in response to drought conditions nearly every other year for the past decade. This year, however, may be the worst yet,” said Wayne de Jong, Director of Disaster Response and Rehabilitation for the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC), “Experts say that this is the worst drought the region has experienced in 60 years.”

In fact, some parts of Kenya received only 10% of the expected rainfall. This is the second or third year of successive failed crops for many of these areas. As a result, families are left with little or no food to eat, prices of food have skyrocketed, and the situation is desperate. Unfortunately, the situation is not limited to Kenya. Similar drought conditions are being reported throughout the Horn of Africa in Ethiopia and Somalia.

CRWRC has been responding in Kenya since April with our local partners (the Anglican Church of Kenya’s Mount Kenya East Christian Community Services and Nazarene Compassionate Ministries) to last year’s drought. This response is being rapidly expanded to meet the increased need.

“The initial drought response targets 3,500 households in Central Kenya,” said Jacqueline Koster, CRWRC’s Disaster Response Manager in East and Southern Africa. “That’s over 35,000 people." These families are receiving a monthly ration of 50kg maize and 10kg split peas. In exchange, beneficiaries are expected to complete Food for Work activities which include the rehabilitation/expansion of water pans, planting of trees and the growing of drought resistant grass for their livestock. CRWRC is now scaling up this drought response to include 1,500 additional households in three new communities in Central Kenya.

A second drought response project will begin in August for approximately 7,000 additional households (42,000 people) in the Central, Rift Valley and Coast regions of Kenya. In total, CRWRC will reach over 12,000 drought-stricken households between now and December. Hopefully the short-rain season in October and November will be sufficient to provide a January 2012 harvest to increase food availability, reduce food prices and restore grazing land for pastoralist communities.
