Be Sunscreen Smart This Summer
By now, we all know that using sunscreen is a good idea to prevent from burning, premature aging and of course skin cancer. The information is a bit overwhelming and the language confusing to many people. These tips and facts are little details that make sunscreen more effective and how to choose the right one for you and your lifestyle.
New labeling has been announced by the FDA, in order to clarify the confusion between sunscreens. It's a positive step towards making it easier to understand and keeping people protected from the sun's dangerous rays.
Sunblock vs Sunscreen: For years, the terms sunblock and sunscreen were thought to be the same. They are not. Sunscreen comes in two types, chemical and physical. Chemical Sunscreens are the suntan lotions and oils that are rated with SPFs (Sun Protective Factor). Physical Sunscreens are also known as Sunblocks. They are not rated with SPFs, but contain high protective qualities.
Think of sunscreen as if it were a house. Sunblock (physical sunscreens) is compared to the walls, blocking anything from entering the house. Chemical Sunscreens (lotions) are the windows with screens on them. They filter, but allow some elements in. Now, imagine you have a choice in the screening, the tighter weave means less elements can pass through to reach you inside the house. This weave is compared to the SPF of sunscreen.
Choosing the Correct Sunscreen: Sunblocks tend to be unfavored by most people because they are not clear when applied. They are the thicker lotions and creams that remain visible when used. However, they are now available in bright colors and are becoming increasingly popular with younger people. They tend to last longer, due to the thick nature of the product and the need to reapply is obvious. These typically contain ingredients, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which block harmful rays. Look for a sunblock that protect against UVA, UVB and UVR. (more to follow on these.
