With Brevard County schools scheduled to start back up in a little over two weeks, and the “unofficial” end of summer closing in on us, I thought I would provide a little information on how our public high schools rank among all other public high schools in the country.
First, a little bit of background info… Every year, Newsweek publishes its “America’s Best High Schools” list. To compile this “Best of” list, Newsweek contacts over 10,000 public high schools in the United States. Schools are required to complete a survey requesting data from the previous year’s school year. More than 1,100 top schools were included in this year’s ranking.
Now, for the results! Drumroll please…
Out of the top 500 public high schools in the United States, Brevard County can be extra-proud of the following schools:
#44 West Shore in Melbourne
#119 Edgewood in Merritt Island
#199 Cocoa Beach in Cocoa Beach
#371 Satellite in Satellite Beach
According to Newsweek, which has been ranking the top public high schools in America for more than a decade, these rankings fully reflect a school’s success turning out college-ready (and life-ready) students. The schools were ranked on graduation rate, college matriculation rate, AP tests taken per graduate, average SAT/ACT scores, average AP/IB/AICE scores, and AP courses offered.
Overall, 43 public high schools in Florida made the top 500 list. Not too shabby!
