The fair is serious(ly fun) business for local kids

Junior Fair Board treasurer Elena Smith, 17, of Athens High School, estimated that 500-1,000 people are competing in the County Fair this year. As one of 21 Junior Fair Board members, Smith who spends around 14 hours at the fair each day, is in charge of running shows and assisting Senior Fair Board members. Despite her busy schedule, she said that running the fair was fun and not stressful. Barbara Rountree, community service worker at the Hocking-Athens-Perry Community Action Regional Food Center, said that the need for meat is particularly dire in the present economic situation. Although the national unemployment rate is 9.2 percent, the average unemployment rate for the 10 counties that the food center covers is much higher, at 14.1 percent. To donate livestock to the food bank, donors should attend the Athens County Fair auction, which will take place Friday at 4 p.m. Upon purchasing an animal, the donor should respond "keep" when asked if he or she would like to re-stall or keep the animal. He or she should then write "Donate to the food bank" or "R&C Processing" (the company that will pick up the livestock) on his or her paperwork). "So many people come," said Senior Fair Board President Brian Llewellyn. "I don't know if people come to see what's going on or to see friends they haven't (seen) since last year at the fair. 'Cause you'll look around and over the hill by the grandstand — on the back side there are benches by the trees — you'll see old guys sitting there and they'll sit there all day long, and they'll just talk to different people.
