Record heat across the United States in the past month has seen an 18-year-old cadet at the U.S. Military Academy die during an exercise and, days later, a paratrooper die after physical training at Fort Bragg, N.C.

In another incident, 10 soldiers doing a brigade run at Fort Bragg weeks earlier fell ill in the heat and sought medical treatment for heat injuries.

On June 6, more than 500 soldiers dropped out of a 10K run for the 3rd Brigade Combat Team at Fort Bragg. Of the 10 who went to the hospital, three were admitted, one to the intensive care unit, according to Lt. Col. Dave Connolly, a spokesman for the 82nd Airborne Division.

Sgt. 1st Class David Jessup, 3rd Infantry Brigade Com-bat Team, 1st Armored Division, had two statements that made the top 10.

You know you are wrong when “you are more concerned about getting home, even when one of your Soldiers has told you they need to talk.” Now more than ever, we need to ensure we are taking care of our Soldiers. It could mean the difference between saving a life or losing one.

You know you are wrong when “you look at your caller ID and choose not to answer the phone because it is one of your leaders.” At this time in our military, you never know what the call could be about; pick up the phone.

Spc. Steven Ocasio, Fort Bliss Dental Activity, says you know you are wrong “if you are letting your non-military spouse wear your Army issued (Army Physical Fitness Training) shirt to go grocery shopping.” While we know there is not a current regulation against this, this is simply a matter of pride for some.

Master Sgt. Douglas Merritt, 1st AD, Division Headquarters, says you know you are wrong when “you are [in] special population [physical training] but you want to play football on sports day.” He also said, “You know you are wrong when you park your [Ford] F-250 in a low fuel emissions parking spot!”

Army spouse Monica Tracy says you know you are wrong if you are “wearing a Bluetooth in uniform and walking around [post].” Or, you know you are wrong “when you walk and talk [on the phone] in uniform.”

Tracy also contributed this one: You know you are wrong “when your [spouse] is hugging/kissing all over you or holding hands in public and you are in uniform.”

Retired Chief Warrant Officer 3 Larry Carnes says you know you are wrong when “your car stereo is up so loud it can be heard [and felt] 50 meters away.
