FLORENCE, S.C. — Trial has been set for February for a Florence man accused of killing a 69-year-olld woman more than three years ago.
The Morning News of Florence reported ( http://bit.ly/qJHtqc ) that prosecutors plan to seek a death sentence if 24-year-old David Gerrard Johnson is found guilty. Johnson is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
The body of Willie Mae Hayes was found stabbed to death Aug. 27, 2008, after she had been reported missing two days earlier.
Florence Police Maj. Carlos Raines said officers responding to the missing person's report found someone had forced the door open.
Hayes' car was found at an apartment complex nearby. Her body was found in a ditch, wrapped in a bedspread from her home.

Horry County, SC (WMBF) Horry County Police have arrested two men in the shooting of another Sunday night in Myrtle Beach.
Sgt. Robert Kegler with the Police Department Horry County, said Jeremy Jermal Fleming, 23, of Murrells Inlet and Abdul Al-Mutakabbir Furquan, 38, of Conway were charged with attempted murder and burglary in the first degree .
Furquan was also charged with possession of firearms and ammunition.
The victim of 27 years told police he heard a knock hard on the door of his apartment around 11:40 p.m. to Ivystone Sunday. When he answered, he saw two men dressed in dark clothes standing at his door.
According to a police report, one of them was carrying a silver revolver and fired a shot at the victim, resulting in an injury in his head area.
The victim said he attempted to push his door closed, but the suspects were able to push the door open.
The victim's roommate spoke with police and said he jumped out of bed upon hearing a loud bang. He said he saw the two men run from the home and drive away in a black Dodge Avenger.
The victim was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center to receive treatment for his injuries. He was no longer listed as a patient Monday afternoon.
Neighbors were on edge Monday after news of the shooting broke out.
"It was terrifying really," commented Ashley Geiger.
She said Monday she and her family were still shaken up after what happened.
"It just doesn't seem right," Geiger said. "It doesn't seem right that someone's banging on someone's door and then shoots them."
Geiger's fiance Tony Brungard said he went over to help the victim. He said the man was bleeding and he was holding a towel up to his head.
"He was yelling for help, yelling for people to call 911," Brungard explained.
He said the ordeal is giving him a different perspective about where he and Geiger live with their children. He said they chose to live off Palmetto Pointe Boulevard because they considered it a safe area.
