Dog Thefts on the Rise Across the Nation
The pair decided to hire a detective – Annalisa Berns of the California-based pet search company Pet Search and Rescue – to recover their beloved pet. Berns brought in a search dog, which followed Mr. James Brown's scent to the fence, after which the trail vanished.
This story had a happy ending. A reward was offered and the dog was returned, but not every case ends so well.
"Most people, over 80, 90 percent, they can get their pets back on their own if they know what to do, they don't need the search dogs," Berns said. "The biggest prevention tip is a collar and tags, hands down it's the easiest, simplest, most inexpensive thing that you can do and really have that increase your chances of getting your dog back safe."
Protect Your Pet
The American Kennel Club also recommends that dog owners have their pets fitted with microchip. It's a simple procedure in which a tiny chip programmed with an ID number is embedded just below the animal's skin. The ID number corresponds to a database containing pet owners' contact information.
Most vets and shelters have equipment to scan a dog for microchips.

See 'Pit Bulls on Parade' in Issaquah on Saturday : The Issaquah ...
BullsEye Dog Rescue, a Pacific Northwest pit bull rescue and education group, is hosting “Pit Bulls on Parade” on Saturday in Issaquah.
The event is free and open to the public. The parade features adoptable pit bulls from throughout the Puget Sound region, and raises money and awareness for the rescue and promotion of responsible ownership of pit bull-type dogs.
The event is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Riverdog Canine Coaching, 1400 19th Ave. N.W.
“This event was designed to show the public what a real pit bull is: smart, athletic and a big clown,” said Lorrie Kalmbach-Ehlers, president and co-founder of BullsEye Dog Rescue. “Unfortunately, many people only see or read about pit bulls in the context of negative news. We feel that it’s important to show our community that this is not representative of the breed as a whole, and that most Puget Sound pit bulls are living happily as cherished family members, therapy and working dogs.“
The festivities include demonstrations in weight pull, slat mill, agility, nosework and flyball. Members of the public and their dogs can also try out some of the activities.
The event also includes raffle drawings and the parade of adoptable pit bulls.
Participants can have dogs microchipped onsite for $20 due to services donated by Coalition: HUMAnE Spay and Neuter Clinic.
BullsEye Dog Rescue is offering free Canine Good Citizen testing for pit bulls and pit mixes. The cost is $10 for other breeds.
Canine Good Citizen s a nationally recognized certification program to reward dogs for good manners in the home and in the community. For every pit bull or pit bull mix earning Canine Good Citizen status, BullsEye earns $150 through a grant from Animal Farm Foundation. Learn more about the program from the American Kennel Club.
