AIRLINE TRAVELERS APPLAUD TOUGHER SECURITY MEASURES

Travelers at the Dane County Regional Airport applauded tightened security measures ordered by the Federal Aviation Administration, as a limited number of flights resumed Thursday.

"They're not tough enough," said fund-raising consultant Roald Kindem of Apple Valley, Minn., of the new security measures.

Those steps include bans on curbside baggage check, visitors at the loading gate and knives in the passenger cabin.

Also to be introduced were random identification checks of passengers and ID checks of employees and vendors. A government-issue picture ID will be required.

At the Dane County airport, the proximity of the parking ramp to the terminal means that all cars entering it are being searched, said Rod McLean, deputy director.

The measures were an attempt to better secure the nation's passenger air service after four planes were hijacked Tuesday in terrorist attacks.

But one travel consultant questioned whether the new steps would make flying safer. And a constitutional expert pointed to the risks to civil liberties raised by random identification checks.
