HRC with Ya Es Hora at Citizenship Workshop in Las Vegas
The Las Vegas ya es hora ¡Ciudadanía! naturalization workshop held on Saturday, July 16th was a success thanks to the kind participation of 175 volunteers who helped fill out, package and review the applications of approximately 180 participants applying for U.S, citizenship, some of which showed up very early in search of assistance. The goal of this workshop is to give the local community, especially the increasingly growing Latino/a community, the opportunity to have a voice in the political process of the United States by becoming voters. This workshop is even more valuable because it provides the assistance for free, and allows them to receive legal advice by some prominent local lawyers. This coalition has organized three events to this date. The first one was held at the Latin Chamber of Commerce in July 2010, and the second one happened at the Rio Casino & All-Suite Hotel on April 16th, 2011. This is the coalition’s third workshop, and the fourth is scheduled for September 24th at the Rio.
The Las Vegas ya es hora ¡Ciudadanía! coalition is made up of more than 18 organizations, private companies and local associations including lead organizations Mi Familia Vota, Caesars Foundation, and the Human Rights Campaign. Partnering organizations include AILA Nevada Chapter, ASI Conference Systems, Colombian Association of Las Vegas, El Tiempo, Univisión 15 Las Vegas, Univisión Radio, Latin Chamber of Commerce, NALEO Educational Fund, SEIU Nevada, Wells Fargo, Las Vegas Asian Chamber of Commerce, Chihuahua Sin Fronteras, Democracia USA, Dom Pedro Brazilian Foundation and Hermandad Mexicana.

The American Trial Lawyers Association’s annual meeting for Immigration Lawyers nationwide was held in San Diego CA last week. Three of our staff attended and participated in discussions on Cancellation of Removals , I 601 Waivers in a foreign national’s home country, Deportation and loss of permanent residence for criminal arrests and convictions, Naturalization and Citizenship and good moral character issues and many, many more topics. ICE has supposedly adopted a policy of not seeking deportation of illegal aliens who have no arrests or convictions, particularly if they may be eligible under the proposed Dream ACT . However we are finding that through E verify , this is coming to an employer near you so illegal immigrants should get ready for that development.
